Les policiers tentaient toujours lundi de comprendre ce qui s’est produit dimanche en fin d’avant-midi lorsqu’une foreuse a percuté une télécabine panoramique de la station Mont Tremblant, faisant un mort et une blessée grave.

Un homme et une femme, des Ontariens dans la cinquantaine, ont été projetés hors de la télécabine et ont fait une chute de plusieurs mètres. L’homme est décédé, et la femme repose toujours dans un état critique dans un centre hospitalier de Montréal.

En fin d’après-midi lundi, la Sûreté du Québec (SQ) a fait savoir que l’homme qui a perdu la vie est Sheldon Johnson, âgé de 50 ans et résidant à Kingston, en Ontario.

La SQ et la Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail enquêtent afin de déterminer dans quelles circonstances cet accident s’est produit. « Est-ce que la personne qui était à bord [de la foreuse] était dans l’exercice de ses fonctions ? Pourquoi cette machinerie est-elle entrée en contact là avec la gondole ? » a expliqué la sergente Audrey-Anne Bilodeau, de la SQ.

Les questions sont préoccupantes, d’autant plus que la machine « n’était pas nécessairement destinée à faire des travaux sur la montagne, ça va de soi, surtout pas quand la montagne est en opération. […] Visiblement, un employé aurait tenté de déplacer, de bouger cette machinerie et, malheureusement, c’est à ce moment qu’il y a eu impact avec la gondole », a raconté la policière.

L’enquête impliquera notamment une analyse de la machinerie elle-même afin de révéler, notamment, si tout l’équipement était en mouvement ou si seulement le mât de l’appareil aurait été en mouvement.

Dans un communiqué diffusé en soirée, la direction de l’entreprise spécialisée en travaux d’excavation et de nivellement Forage M2P, basée à Saint-Hippolyte, a confirmé que cet « incident » impliquait un de ses employés, qui a été hospitalisé pour « un violent choc nerveux ».

« Nos pensées vont aux proches de la victime et de son épouse, qui se trouvaient dans l’une des télécabines des lieux qui a été heurtée, en mouvement, par le mât d’une foreuse qu’un employé s’est employé à déplacer du site via un sentier prescrit par le propriétaire de Mont Tremblant », indique une déclaration attribuée au président de l’entreprise, Maxime Patry.

Des circonstances à éclaircir

Bien que l’hypothèse de la négligence criminelle ne puisse être écartée, « il est certainement trop tôt pour qu’on s’avance à savoir s’il y aurait des accusations criminelles », a indiqué la sergente Bilodeau, précisant qu’il y a encore beaucoup de témoins à rencontrer. Les enquêteurs espèrent pouvoir parler à la dame blessée lorsque celle-ci sera en mesure de le faire.

Dans un communiqué transmis en soirée dimanche, Station Mont Tremblant a indiqué que les télécabines demeureraient fermées jusqu’à nouvel ordre.

The Dutch prime minister hands in his resignation as the government collapses over migration

HE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS – 

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte visited the king Saturday to turn in the resignation of his four-party coalition and set the deeply divided Netherlands on track for a general election later this year.

King Willem-Alexander flew back from a family vacation in Greece to meet with Rutte, who drove to the palace in his Saab station wagon for the meeting to explain the political crisis that toppled his administration.

Rutte declined to answer reporters’ questions as he drove away from the meeting that lasted over an hour, saying the talks with the monarch were private.

The vexed issue of reining in migration that has troubled countries across Europe for years was the final stumbling block that brought down Rutte’s government Friday night, exposing the deep ideological differences between the four parties that made up the uneasy coalition.

Now it is likely to dominate campaigning for an election that is still months away.

“We are the party that can ensure a majority to significantly restrict the flow of asylum seekers,” said Geert Wilders, leader of the anti-immigration Party for Freedom, who supported Rutte’s first minority coalition 13 years ago, but also ultimately brought it down.

Opposition parties on the left also want to make the election about tackling problems they accuse Rutte of failing to adequately address — from climate change to a chronic housing shortage and the future of the nation’s multibillion-euro (-dollar) agricultural sector.

Socialist Party leader Lilian Marijnissen told Dutch broadcaster NOS the collapse of Rutte’s government was “good news for the Netherlands. I think that everybody felt that this Cabinet was done. They have created more problems than they solved.”

Despite the divisions between the four parties in Rutte’s government, it will remain in power as a caretaker administration until a new coalition is formed, but will not pass major new laws.

“Given the challenges of the times, a war on this continent, nobody profits from a political crisis,” tweeted Sigrid Kaag, leader of the centrist, pro-Europe D66 party.

Rutte, the Netherlands’ longest serving premier and a veteran consensus builder, appeared to be the one who was prepared to torpedo his fourth coalition government with tough demands in negotiations over how to reduce the number of migrants seeking asylum in his country.

Rutte negotiated for months over a package of measures to reduce the flow of new migrants arriving in the country of nearly 18 million people. Proposals reportedly included creating two classes of asylum — a temporary one for people fleeing conflicts and a permanent one for people trying to escape persecution — and reducing the number of family members who are allowed to join asylum-seekers in the Netherlands. The idea of blocking family members was strongly opposed by minority coalition party ChristenUnie.

“I think unnecessary tension was introduced” to the talks, said Kaag.

Pieter Heerma, the leader of coalition partner the Christian Democrats, called Rutte’s approach in the talks “almost reckless.”

The fall of the government comes just months after a new, populist pro-farmer party, the Farmers Citizens Movement, known by its Dutch acronym BBB, shocked the political establishment by winning provincial elections. The party is already the largest bloc in the Dutch Senate and will be a serious threat to Rutte’s People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy.

The BBB’s leader, Caroline van der Plas, said her party would dust off their campaign posters from the provincial vote and go again.

“The campaign has begun!” Van der Plas said in a tweet that showed her party’s supporters hanging flags and banners from lamp posts.

At least eleven people were killed in West Bengal panchayat election violence since midnight, officials said. Voting is underway across 73,887 seats in the state, which began at 7 AM. Among those killed were five TMC members, and one worker each of the BJP, CPI(M) and Congress, and the supporter of an Independent candidate. Besides violent clashes that injured several people, ballot boxes were destroyed in at least two polling booths. About 5.67 crore people living in the state’s rural areas are eligible to vote. At least 600 companies of central forces have been deployed for the elections along with around 70,000 state police.

West Bengal panchayat election live: Two children injured in South 24 Paraganas district

Two children were injured in a blast in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district which happened when they picked up a crude bomb from the roadside mistaking it to be a ball. The incident happened in Bhangor amid the polling for panchayat elections in the state. The two children, aged between 8 and 10, were admitted to a hospital, he said.

“The two children mistook the crude bomb for a ball, and as one of them touched it, it went off. Security forces were sent to the area to find if any more bombs were there,” an official said.

Cutting across ideological lines, all parties in West Bengal condemned the killing of nine people in various parts of the state as voting for the panchayat elections is underway.

The opposition BJP and CPI(M) alleged that the State Election Commission (SEC) did not deploy the central forces as per the orders of the Calcutta High Court.

The ruling TMC, which lost five of its supporters to poll violence, questioned the absence of central forces that have been brought in for the elections.

Police are continuing to question a woman over a car crash at a school which killed an eight-year-old girl, as floral tributes are laid at the scene.

Twelve people were taken to hospital after a Land Rover crashed into The Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon.

None of the children injured on Thursday are in a critical condition, the chair of governors told the BBC.

The woman in her 40s remains in custody having been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

One line of inquiry is that the driver had a medical incident, the BBC understands.

The Met Police has removed the car from the site, in south-west London, as part of its investigation and the cordon has been lifted. The force has said it is not treating the crash as terror-related.

London Ambulance Service said it sent 15 ambulances to the scene and treated 16 people.

St George’s Hospital in Tooting said it had received “a number of patients who are being cared for by our specialist clinical teams”.

Det Ch Sup Clair Kelland, local police commander for south-west London, said: “We would ask people not to speculate while we work to understand the full circumstances of what has happened during this tragic incident.”

Floral tributes have been laid outside the school for girls aged four to 11, which is based on Camp Road near Wimbledon Common.

One local teacher, who asked not to be named, told the BBC she knows some of the families affected by the crash and said they were “distressed”.

She said: “I wanted to pay tribute to this girl, her family and the school, and I’m really sorry.

“I wanted to pay my respects and for [my son] to see that’s an important thing to do.”

MP for Wimbledon Stephen Hammond said the pupils had been gathered for an end-of-year celebration party in the garden. He described the crash as “extremely distressing and extremely concerning”.

John Tucker, chair of the board of governors, said “the school community is profoundly affected by this tragedy”.

He added that activities planned at the school on Friday had been cancelled.

The school’s website was replaced by a holding page with a statement reading: “We are profoundly shocked by the tragic accident this morning at Wilberforce House and devastated that it has claimed the life of one of our young pupils as well as injuring several others.

“Our thoughts are with the bereaved family and with the families of those injured at this terrible time.”

The private girls’ school is just a mile away from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club as it hosts the world-famous tennis tournament.

Ian Hewitt, chair of the All England Club, visited the school to “offer our heartfelt sympathies to all affected by this tragic, tragic incident”.

He added: “I just want to offer condolences on behalf of the All England Club and everyone involved in Wimbledon Tennis.

“We feel closely associated with the community and we recognise what a tragic incident [it is].”

On Thursday, a spokesman for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said his “deepest condolences” were with the family of the girl who had died, and his thoughts were with all of those involved and injured.
